Lead Instrumentation Designer

Job description

Unity Partners on behalf of our offshore energy partner

Lead Instrumentation Designer – Offshore & Energy Projects | The Netherlands

Our partner is a leading engineering organization delivering complex solutions for offshore wind, oil & gas, and onshore energy projects. To strengthen their instrumentation team, we’re looking for a Lead Instrumentation Designer who enjoys translating complex technical challenges into practical, buildable designs within multidisciplinary project environments.

In this role, you will work on a wide range of projects — from large-scale offshore installations to smaller, high-impact engineering assignments. You’ll design complete instrumentation systems including fire & gas detection, safety systems, process control, and telecommunications. As the technical pivot within the project team, you safeguard quality, coordinate with other disciplines, and mentor junior designers.

Key Responsibilities

As a Lead Instrumentation Designer, you will:

  • Produce instrumentation drawings and lists required for construction, fabrication, and installation.
  • Design full instrumentation systems including fire & gas detection, safety systems, process control, and telecom systems.
  • Collaborate closely with specialists in electrical, mechanical, process, and automation engineering to achieve integrated design solutions.
  • Coordinate design activities within the instrumentation discipline and support junior designers.
  • Ensure compliance with engineering standards, classification rules, and project-specific requirements.
  • Work across both large multidisciplinary offshore projects and smaller parallel assignments.
  • Maintain a structured approach and clear design documentation, even under pressure.

Your Profile

  • Technical MBO-level diploma in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
  • 5+ years of experience in instrumentation design for offshore, energy, or industrial projects.
  • Experience with Smart Plant Instrumentation (SPI) and/or AutoCAD (preferred).
  • Experience with substation projects is a strong advantage.
  • Familiar with applicable design codes and classification bureau requirements.
  • Fluent in Dutch and English, both spoken and written.
  • Strong communication, coordination, and leadership skills.
  • Structured working style with the ability to stay calm and focused under project pressure.

Organization & Offer

You’ll join a diverse, multidisciplinary engineering environment where quality, expertise, and teamwork come together to build major offshore and energy infrastructure.

What you can expect:

  • High-impact engineering projects across sectors — from offshore wind platforms to industrial facilities, water treatment plants, and advanced marine systems.
  • A professional yet friendly atmosphere with regular company events, sports trips, and team celebrations.
  • Flexible employment conditions, allowing you to choose extra salary, additional vacation days, or a combination.
  • Excellent secondary benefits, including:
    • 31 vacation days
    • 7% annual bonus
    • Profit sharing
    • Flexible pension scheme
    • Travel allowance & home-working compensation
  • Extensive development opportunities through training, courses, and certification programs.
